In the evening of Jan. 26, 2010, the Tianjin Song and Dance Troupe held its opening performance in Trinidad and Tobago in the National Academy for the Performing Arts(NAPA), Port of Spain. President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Professor George Maxwell Richards and Mrs. Richards, Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Senator Manning, and nearly 1000 distinguished guests including Cabinet ministers, Senators, members of the Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps attended the event. H.E. Mr. Yang Youming, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Trinidad and Tobago, and his wife Mrs. Geng Hailing were present.
Ambassador Yang delivered a short speech before the performance began. He expressed warm welcome to the performing artists from Tianjin. He told the story of Madam Dai Ailian, who was born in Trinidad, and later became the Mother of Chinese Modern Dance. Ambassador Yang highly praised Madam Dai as the vanguard of the cultural exchanges between China and Trinidad and Tobago. He said that cultural exchange is an important part of the bilateral relations between the two countries, and he thanked the Tianjin performing artists for carrying on this fine tradition by visiting Trinidad and Tobago. Ambassador Yang took the opportunity to send his greetings for Spring Festival to the Chinese community in Trinidad and Tobago and wished a happy carnival to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Prime Minister Manning, in his remarks, expressed his warm welcome to the artists of Tianjin Song and Dance Troupe and offered his seasonal greetings to the audience present. He thanked the Chinese workers for the construction of NAPA, and called it the world class landmark building. He said that it is most appropriate for the top level artists from China to perform in NAPA. Talking about the development of relations between Trinidad and Tobago and China in the 21st century, he said that China is a country with great influence in the world. There is great vitality and potential in the relations between the two countries, and Trinidad and Tobago is willing to further develop the relations with China.
The show started after the national anthems of China and Trinidad and Tobago were played. The performing artists from Tianjin brought to the audience a series of wonderful Chinese music and dance, both traditional and with modern elements. Among them were the most well-known "Jasmine Flowers", Chinese Festival music "Birds Greeting Phoenix", "Blooming Flowers and Moon" . They also played the "Old Lady", a calypso song of Trinidad and Tobago. It became the most impressive moment of the evening when this piece of music was played on Chinese instruments, especially when the audience were told that the artists learnt the piece in just a few hours after they arrived in the country. The evening ended in a happy Chinese tune called "Step by Step".
Accompanied by Ambassador Yang and his wife, President Richards and Mrs. Richards, Prime Minister Manning and Mrs. Manning met with key artists of the Troupe and had photos taken with them.
