Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi Meets with the USA Envision EMI Delegation

On May 22, 2008, Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi met with the USA Envision EMI delegation comprised of university students majoring in diplomacy and international relations. Liu briefly introduced the over-50-century old civilization of China, tremendous progress China has made since the opening-up and the history of friendly exchanges between China and the U.S.A. He expressed the hope that the visit would help American university students comprehensively and objectively understand China and China-U.S. relations, increase their exchanges and friendship with the Chinese youth, and join hands to build a bright future for China-U.S. relationship. Deng Hongbo, Deputy Director-General of the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs, introduced the current China-U.S. relations and answered the questions concerning China's foreign policies, Taiwan, counter terrorism, human rights and environmental protection. The youth diplomats from the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs, the Department of Policy Planning, and the Information Department had group discussions with the students. The students expressed their deep condolences and sorrows over the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan province and indicated that the visit increased their understanding of China's realities and foreign polices and they were willing to make active efforts to enhance the friendship between the people and promote the development of bilateral ties. The U.S.A. Envision EMI is committed to arranging after-school education for the US university and middle school students and overseas visits and exchanges for excellent students. The Chinese foreign ministry has received the U.S. student delegations organized by Envision EMI for 6 years in a row since 2003.
