Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun Meets with Iraqi Government Spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh

On August 9, 2008, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun met in the Foreign Ministry with Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh, who is here to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on behalf of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Zhai welcomed Ali al-Dabbagh to attend the opening ceremony and watch the games. Zhai said in recent years, bilateral friendly cooperation in all areas has shown a momentum of sound development. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties and China is ready to take this opportunity to push China-Iraq relations for greater progress in the new period. China supports Iraq's reconstruction and is ready to continue offering aid to this end.

Ali al-Dabbagh spoke highly of the great changes in China, hailing the Beijing Olympic Games' spectacular opening. He expressed belief that the games will be great success. Ali al-Dabbagh said Iraq-China relations remain good and the Iraqi side thanks China for offering aid when Iraq was having a difficult time. Iraq will firmly adhere to the one-China policy and strengthen exchanges and cooperation in all areas.

Ali al-Dabbagh also briefed on the domestic situation in Iraq. Zhai said China supports Iraq's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and hopes the country will achieve unity, stability and development at an early date.
