Vice Foreign Minister Li Jinzhang Meets with ICRC Director of Operations Pierre Krähenbühl

On January 27, 2010, Vice Foreign Minister Li Jinzhang, at request, met with visiting Director of Operations of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Pierre Krähenbühl. Speaking highly of ICRC's role, Li said that the active efforts of the ICRC, which is the founder of the Red Cross movement and guardian of the Geneva Conventions, in participating in the rescue operations related with armed conflicts and natural disasters and transmitting the international humanitarian law have been widely praised. Since establishing its East Asia representative office in Beijing in 2005, the ICRC has been engaged in a number of cooperation projects with China which feels satisfactory with the cooperation results. He also introduced China's efforts of earthquake relief in Haiti and noted that China is ready to join hands with the international community, including the ICRC, to help the Haitian people overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes at the earliest date possible.
Pierre expressed appreciation for China's outstanding rescue performance in Haiti and condolence over the death of eight Chinese peacekeeping police. He said that the ICRC attaches great importance to developing the cooperative relations with China and will constantly expand cooperation with related Chinese organizations in strict compliance with the neutral and non-political principle and the provisions of the bilateral memorandum.
