On the afternoon of January 21, 2005, President Hu Jintao met with Canadian Prime Minister Martin at the Great Hall of the People. Hu Jintao said that China-Canada relations enjoy fast-growing momentum. Bilateral political ties become increasingly closer. The economic and trade relations between the two countries have grown from one-dimensional trade to comprehensive and multi-facet cooperation in economy, trade and technology. The cooperation in other areas also scores fruitful results. China appreciates Canada for pursuing the one-China policy on the issue of Taiwan. Hu stressed that against the backdrop of economic globalization and the acceleration of regional cooperation further strengthening China-Canada cooperation within the bilateral and multi-lateral frameworks is not only in the interest of both sides, but also conducive to the regional and even global peace, stability, development and prosperity. China is willing to work with Canada to strive to advance the comprehensive cooperative partnership between the two countries based upon mutual respect in politics, mutual benefits in economy and mutual learning in culture. Martin said during his meeting with President Hu in Chile last year, both sides reached important common consensus on deepening Canada-China relations. Today, the consensus is being implemented. Both sides established strategic work group and issued joint documents, indicating that the high-level contacts are of great importance to deepening mutual understanding and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation. Canada wishes to establish a long-term partnership with China and carry out extensive cooperation in bilateral and international affairs so as to benefit both peoples. Martin also reaffirmed that Canada will continue to pursue the one-China policy.
