On June 8, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Germany's Baltic resort of Heiligendamm, exchanging views on bilateral ties.

Hu said China and Canada, both important countries along the Pacific Rim, share broad common interests. China-Canada relations have developed smoothly on the whole since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1970, Hu said, citing the facts that the mutual trust between the two countries has been increased with pragmatic cooperation expanded continuously. The launch of China-Canada strategic partnership has also brought tangible benefits to the two countries and their peoples, said Hu. Because of the different domestic conditions, it is natural that China and Canada have differences over some issues, the Chinese president said. The two sides should respect each other, treat each other equally and properly handle their differences through dialogue and consultation, he said. China attaches importance to ties with Canada and is ready to work with China to strengthen cooperation in political, economic and cultural fields, and in international affairs, and to properly handle differences, in a bid to push for in-depth development of bilateral strategic partnership.

Harper said Canada and China enjoy long-term friendly relations and there are great potentials for cooperation in many important areas. The two sides should enhance mutual investment and strengthen trade cooperation, he said, adding that bilateral cooperation in environmental protection and energy saving should also be increased. He urged both sides to advance exchanges in public health and disease prevention and continue dialogue on legal system.
