Yang Jiechi Meets with His Latin American Counterparts

On January 16, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met separately with some of his Latin American counterparts on the sidelines of the 4th foreign ministers' meeting of the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).

In talks with Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Tiana, the two sides are of one mind that through joint efforts, China-Argentina strategic partnership has witnessed in-depth development over the past years. The two countries have maintained sound political trust, expanded pragmatic cooperation in an in-depth manner and kept close coordination and collaboration in major international and regional issues of common concern. They agreed that the two nations need to proceed from a long- term perspective, strengthen high-level exchanges, advance practical cooperation in areas of finance, energy and infrastructure construction, and promote contacts and coordination on such issues as climate change, the reform of international financial system and the development of the Group of 20, in a bid to elevate bilateral ties to a new level.

During the meeting with Mexican Foreign Secretary Paricia Espinosa Cantellano, both sides agreed that in recent years the China-Mexico strategic partnership has been developing rapidly and the two countries have maintained close high-level contacts and political dialogue, steadily advanced bilateral economic and trade cooperation and coordinated closely in tackling the global financial crisis, climate change and other major international issues. The two countries should strengthen dialogue and cooperation and push the China-Mexico strategic partnership to a new level. The Mexican side pledged to actively participate in the Shanghai Expo to advance trade and humanities exchanges between the two countries. Yang said China will work closely with Mexico to push the Mexico climate change conference to yield outcome that is conducive to safeguarding rights and interests of developing countries and to advancing global efforts to cope with climate change.

During the meeting with Costa Rican Foreign Minister Bruno Stagno Ugarte, both sides agreed that under the joint promotion of the leaders of the two countries, China-Costa Rica bilateral ties have made substantial progress, which proves the correctness of the two countries’ decision to establish diplomatic ties. The two countries have witnessed increasing political trust, steadily advancing economic and trade cooperation and in-depth development of humanities exchanges with sound coordination in major international issues. Both countries have handled bilateral ties from a strategic height and are ready to maintain high-level exchanges, boost pragmatic cooperation, deepen cultural and people-to-people contacts and consolidate the political, economic and social basis of bilateral ties.

In talks with Colombian Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez Merizalde, both sides agreed that their relationship is at its best in history. Both sides should grasp the general situation of bilateral ties, build well the platform of mutually beneficial cooperation, conduct infrastructure and investment cooperation and safeguard the social foundation of China-Mexico friendly relations so as to push forward bilateral ties.
