Wen Jiabao Meets with Foreign Political Leaders and WEF Executive Chairman

On September 6, 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met respectively with Finnish President Tarja Halonen, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Latvian Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis, World Economic Forum (WEF) Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab and Singaporean Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who came to attend the summer meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in China's northeastern port city of Dalian.

When meeting with Halonen, Wen first appreciated the efforts Finland had made in cementing China-Europe relations during its rotating presidency of the European Union last year. He expected Finland would continue to actively push forward China-Europe relations.

Regarding Finland as China's important partner in northern Europe, Wen said recent years have witnessed fruitful cooperation in all areas. Wen said that China is ready to learn more from Finland in energy saving, environmental protection and technological innovation. He also called for the two countries to expand exchanges and cooperation in social insurance as well as employment security.

Halonen extended congratulations on the convening of the WEF summer meeting in Dalian, stressing the great importance of China's participation in global issues.

Hailing the great potential of Finland-China cooperation, Halonen said her country expected to step up long-term cooperation with China. She also vowed to work closely with China to further strengthen relations between Europe and China as well as the whole Asia.

When meeting with Mohammed, Wen hailed the rapid growth of China-UAE relations. He said the two countries have achieved a lot in their cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure construction and other areas. China treasures its relations with the UAE, the premier said, calling for both sides to maintain high-level exchanges, expand trade scale and two-way investment, and step up cooperation in oil and gas exploration and development, oil reservation facilities and engineering technologies. He also expressed hope that UAE will continue its active role in accelerating the free trade zone negotiations between China and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Wen said China has all along proposed to achieve peaceful co-existence between the Arab world and Israel through political negotiations, based on relevant UN resolutions and the principle of "land for peace". China supports the Arab peace initiative, the premier said, calling for Israel and Palestine to take positive measures to resume peaceful dialogues.

In response, Mohammed told Wen the UAE hopes to keep high-level contacts with China, and beef up cooperation in trade, energy and other areas, so that the relations between the two countries will achieve better development on the existing sound basis. The UAE expects to serve as a bridge for Chinese products to enter the Middle East and Europe, he said, expressing willingness to exchange experience on development with China.

Mohammed believed the Middle East problems root in the conflict between Palestine and Israel, calling for various parties to sign a peaceful agreement at an early date. UAE will continue its role of working for peace and facilitating talks, he added.

Both sides also exchanged views on issues concerning Iraq and Afghanistan.

During the meeting with Kalvitis, Wen appreciated the Latvian government for attaching importance to ties with China. Regarding Latvia as an important partner in the Baltic Sea region, Wen said China is willing to explore new areas and approach to expand economic collaboration, especially in the areas of port construction and marine transportation. Wen said China is to provide sound environment for the entrance of the Latvian products into the country, to enhance the scale and level of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. He also called for more people-to-people exchanges to build mutual understanding and exchanges between the two peoples.

Wen said both Europe and Asia are enjoying prime development, adding that their high complementarity and broad common interest help create favorable conditions for the cooperation. He urged both sides to make full use of Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) and other mechanisms to deepen strategic dialogue and cooperation for mutual benefits. Wen expressed hope that with the joint efforts of all members, the seventh summit of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM), which is to be held in China next year, will help promote the new partnerships between the two continents.

Kalvitis praised China for its diplomatic policy that equally treats different countries, and stressed the great importance of China's participation in global issues. He said strengthening friendly cooperation with China is of great significance to Latvia, adding that his country is expected to expand collaboration with China in economy, trade, investment, financial services and tourism. He said Latvia also hopes to tap its geographical advantages in building a "marine silk road" between China and the Baltic Sea.

Kalvitis said Latvia is ready to make contributions to the success of the ASEM summit.

When meeting with Schwab, the premier noted that the WEF has shown strong interest and will of cooperating with China as it inaugurates the summer meeting in Dalian, which is in parallel to the WEF winter meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Wen said as China accelerates the pace of opening-up and internationalization of its economy, Chinese companies have increasingly greater exposure to both cooperation and competition in the global arena. He expressed the hope that the WEF will make full use of the opportunities offered by China's economic growth and opening-up to bring about advanced business ideas, management models and information network to China. He also hoped the forum would help Chinese companies grow stronger and compete in global market and facilitate global growth companies to grow up both in China and the world.

Schwab said more and more Chinese growth companies are taking active part in globalization as China emerges as an economic power and wield greater influence in global economy. He expressed gratification on his decision of taking the forum to China and thanked the Chinese government for support and help. Schwab expressed the belief that the summer meeting, namely, the Inaugural Annual Meeting of the New Champions, will be a success and stay in China for the long run.

During Premier Wen's meeting with Goh Chok Tong, both sides spoke positively of the sound momentum of China-Singapore relations and agreed to expand cooperation in building ecological cities. The two leaders also agreed to explore new cooperative projects including tapping the Changxing Island of Liaoning province, for both sustainable development and economic profits.

On the same day, Wen also met with Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan.

Secretary of the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee Li Keqiang, Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo, Vice-Chairman of State Development and Reform Commission Chen Deming and other officials attended the above-mentioned meetings.
