Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein

2007/10/30

On the afternoon of October 30, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein at the Great Hall of the People. Both sides agreed to take the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties as a new starting point and jointly open up a brighter future for China-Jordan friendly cooperation.

On bilateral relations, Hu hailed Abdullah's remarkable contribution to promoting China-Jordan friendship and development of bilateral ties since he ascended the throne. Hu said since the establishment of diplomatic ties three decades ago, bilateral ties have made rapid progress with frequent high-level exchanges in recent years. The mechanism of strategic dialogue group as agreed upon by both sides has been officially launched and the scale of economic and trade cooperation has been enlarged, said the president. Hu appreciated the adherence of the King and the Jordanian government to the one-China policy and their support for China's reunification cause.

King Abdullah said China is actively committed to promoting the just cause of world peace and development and has provided selfless help to Jordan over the years, a fact deeply respected by the people of Jordan. Jordan has always seen it as priority to develop relations with China and hopes to continue to consolidate and strengthen the friendly cooperation with China, the King added. He said Jordan will firmly adhere to the one-China policy and support China's reunification cause.

Hu said China is ready to work with Jordan to take the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties to further carry forward the traditional friendship between the two countries and push bilateral friendly cooperation to a new level. He put forward a four-point proposal on developing bilateral ties. First, deepen political relations. Hu urged both sides to maintain high-level contacts and exchanges of visits at all levels, give full play to the role of strategic dialogue group and continue communication and support on major issues of mutual concern. Second, expand economic and trade cooperation. China is ready to make concerted efforts with Jordan to optimize the mix of exports and imports, import more products from Jordan, make it easier to promote Jordanian products in China, and encourage and support cooperation between enterprises in both countries in trade, investment, services and logistics. Third, widen areas of cooperation. China is ready to conduct technology exchanges and pragmatic cooperation with Jordan on new energy resources development and water resources utilization, and strive to cultivate new growth points for cooperation. Fourth, promote humanistic exchanges. Both sides should further exchanges in culture, education, journalism, sports and other fields and actively push forward bilateral cooperation in exchanges of visits between cultural groups, language teaching and dispatch of overseas students, so as to facilitate the friendly exchanges between the two peoples.

King Abdullah said on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Jordan looks forward to working together with China to open up a new chapter for bilateral cooperation. He hoped that both sides will, through the mechanism of strategic dialogue group, exchange views on bilateral ties and other major issues in a timely manner. He said Jordan hopes to improve cooperation with China in the areas of economy, trade and energy and see an early opening of air links between the two countries. He also suggested both sides promote exchanges and cooperation on education and culture and build up mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, especially the youths.

When talking about the situation in the Middle East, King Abdullah said the Palestine-Israeli conflict is the crux of the Middle East issue and the priority for now is to promote the negotiation between Palestine and Israel towards concrete achievements so as to realize peaceful coexistence at an early date and push for a long-lasting solution to the Middle East issue. King Abdullah appreciated China's constructive efforts on promoting the Middle East peace process and hoped that China will continue to play an active role in finding a solution to the issue.

Hu said China supports the international efforts on promoting peace in the Middle East, including the Arab Peace Initiative, and hopes relevant parties would, in accordance with relevant resolutions of the United Nations and the principle of "land for peace," properly resolve conflict through dialogue and negotiations and realize peaceful coexistence. "China is ready to work together with the international community including Jordan, to continue to play a constructive role in easing tension in the Middle East and realizing comprehensive, equitable and lasting peace in the region," said Hu.

After the talks, the two heads of state attended the signing ceremony of several cooperation agreements concerning economic, technology and other areas.

Prior to the talks, President Hu Jintao held a welcoming ceremony for King Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein at the Square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People. Vice Chairman Xu Jialu of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, Vice Chairman Bai Lichen of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-government League Li Minkuan, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister in charge of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence Zhang Qingwei and Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Gong Xiaosheng attended the ceremony.
