Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with His Turkish Counterpart Davutoglu

On January 27, 2010, visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in Istanbul. Both sides reached important consensus in advancing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries. Yang said that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries have been developing in the past 39 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. During his visit to China last year, Turkish President Abdullah Gul reached consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on deepening bilateral cooperation. Yang said it is of great significance to the development of bilateral ties. The two sides should make joint efforts for the implementation of consensus. Yang said that the two sides should further enhance political trust and respect and take care of each other's concerns. They should bring into play their complementary advantages to broaden space of economic and trade cooperation. The two sides should also strengthen coordination on major international and regional issues to jointly address challenges, he said. China and Turkey should push forward people-to-people and cultural exchanges by taking the opportunity of World Expo in Shanghai, Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture and other events, so as to actively promote humanities exchanges between the two countries, he added. The Chinese foreign minister appreciated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and thanked the Turkish side for understanding and supporting the Chinese government in its endeavor to defend state sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Turkish foreign minister said that his government attaches great importance to its relations with China and expressed his hope that the two countries will maintain high-level exchanges and further promote cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, finance, investment, tourism and culture. He said that Turkey expects more Chinese investment and participation in construction of large-scale infrastructure projects in Turkey. He reaffirmed that Turkey will continue to adhere to the one-China policy. The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. Following the talks, the two foreign ministers attended a joint press conference.
