President Hu Jintao Meets with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Zia

On the afternoon of August 18, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 30 years ago between China and Bangladesh, bilateral relations have been growing smoothly on the basis of the Five Principle of Peaceful Coexistence. Both sides trust and respect each other, treat each other as equals, and live in harmony. The all-round and multi-faceted exchange and cooperation in such fields as politics, economy, trade, culture, science and technology has yielded outstanding results. Both sides have also maintained sound coordination and collaboration in international and regional affairs. China appreciates and thanks Bangladesh for the valuable support on the question of Taiwan and the issues of Tibet, and human rights. China-Bangladesh relations have become a good example of peaceful coexistence between countries with different social systems and cultural backgrounds.

Hu said that China values the relationship with Bangladesh. Under the new situation in the new century, China would like to work with Bangladesh to take the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties to further strengthen the exchange and cooperation in bilateral and multilateral areas, and constantly enrich and deepen the connotations of bilateral relations in an effort to push the comprehensive and cooperative partnership between the two countries to a new high and make active contributions to maintaining regional peace and stability, driving regional economic cooperation and promoting the common development of all countries.

Zia said that Bangladesh and China are friendly neighbors and the two peoples are sincere friends. With the joint efforts of both sides, the traditional friendship has been increasingly consolidated and the cooperation in various sectors has been constantly strengthened. The Bangladeshi side admires the achievements made by China in the economic development and the constructive role played in China in international affairs. The Bangladeshi government will unswervingly uphold the one-China policy. She said that the Bangladeshi side will make active efforts to maintain the high-level exchanges of visits with China, deepen the pragmatic cooperation in the field of economy and trade, strengthen the coordination and cooperation in international affairs and push for the constant growth of bilateral relations.

Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo was present at the meeting.
