Premier Wen Jiabao Meets with King of Cambodia Sihamoni

2005/08/11

On August 10, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen pointed out that the friendship between China and Cambodia, which is carefully initiated and cultivated by several generations of leaders of both countries, has stood the tests of the history and the fluctuating international situation. Over years, China and Cambodia have been actively promoting the good-neighborly friendship on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the bilateral cooperation has achieved major fruits, benefiting both the two countries and their people.

Wen stressed that Cambodia constitutes an important part in China's diplomatic ties with neighboring countries. The Chinese government attaches great importance to its good-neighborly and friendly relations with Cambodia, cherishes its special friendship with the Cambodian royal family and expects to work with Cambodia to enhance the mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields and raise the bilateral ties to a new level.

In recent years, China's relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) progress rapidly, which China values very much. We hope to see a united and strong ASEAN and stand ready to make joint efforts with all the ASEAN members including Cambodia to push forward regional cooperation and make new contributions to regional peace and prosperity, noted Wen.

Sihamoni said that over the years the leaders of the two countries and the two peoples have developed profound friendship. I pay my first state visit as the new King of Cambodia to China with the purpose of carrying on the traditional friendship between our two countries. The Cambodian people admire the Chinese people's great development achievements and appreciate China's long-term sincere support and assistance to them. Currently the momentum of friendly exchanges and pragmatic and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries is encouraging. The Cambodian royal family, National Assembly, government and people will make continuous efforts to consolidate the traditional friendship with China and deepen bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various areas. He reiterated that the Cambodian government will resolutely adhere to the one-China policy and oppose "Taiwan independence" in whatever form.
