Wen Jiabao Meets Respectively with Leaders of Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar

2007/11/19

On November 19, 2007, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met respectively with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Myanmar's Prime Minister Thein Sein in Singapore.

When meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen pointed out that China and Vietnam are friendly neighbors and major partners for cooperation as well, and both sides adhere to the reform and opening up policy and embark on a path of development suitable to their national realities. Under the current complex, changeable situation, to further consolidate and strengthen bilateral friendly cooperation is of great significance. China is willing to promote bilateral relations with Vietnam, guided by the principles of long-term stability, orientation toward future, good neighborliness and all-round cooperation, Wen said.

The economic and trade relations between the two countries have been developing smoothly, Wen said. He urged both sides to focus efforts on working out a five-year development plan on economic and trade cooperation. China and Vietnam should explore possibilities for cooperation projects in two economic corridors and one economic belt in the region, he said. The two countries should also promote cooperation in large projects on industry, infrastructures and energy, Wen added.

Wen emphasized that the proper handling of territorial issues in border areas is vital to stable development of bilateral ties. Wen expressed hope that the two sides will speed up the process of the land border demarcation, steadily advance negotiations on the demarcation and joint exploitation of the maritime space at the entrance to Beibu Gulf and solve the South China Sea issue under the principle of joint exploitation while putting aside the differences.

Expressing congratulations on the successful convening of the 17th CPC National Congress, Dung said Vietnam and China have witnessed comprehensive growth of bilateral ties in recent years with frequent high-level exchanges and fruitful economic and trade cooperation. Vietnam agreed with China on furthering bilateral relations and hoped to boost infrastructure in the two economic corridors and the economic belt, he said, adding that Vietnam was willingness to speed up the economic and trade integration between neighboring border provinces and regions of the two countries. Vietnam is ready to develop bilateral cooperation on platforms such as the annual fair between China and the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations, he noted.

Nguyen Tan Dung said Vietnam will work with China, in the spirit of good-neighborliness, friendship, sincerity and mutual trust, to complete the demarcation of terrestrial border in 2008 as scheduled and solve the maritime issue through consultation, so that it will not influence the general development of bilateral ties.

When meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Wen said next year will mark the 50th anniversary of China-Cambodia diplomatic ties. He hoped that both sides will take this opportunity to carry forward their traditional friendship, keep closer exchanges and cooperation and push the comprehensive cooperative relations to a new level.

Wen said China attaches great importance to economic and trade cooperation with Cambodia and is ready to take further measures to increase imports from the country. China will make unremitting efforts to ensure the prompt completion of roads, bridges, hydro-electric plants and other key cooperation projects in Cambia to high standards to benefit the Cambodian people. Meanwhile, China is ready to continue discussing new areas and new ways of mutually beneficial cooperation with Cambodia and enhance the level of bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

Hun Sen said his country will hold various events in cooperation with China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties. He hoped both sides will take it as a new milestone to further strengthen friendly cooperation. Cambodia is forging ahead in its domestic economic development, he said, expressing hope that China will continue to support and participate in Cambodia's infrastructure construction. Cambodia welcomes more investment from China, the prime minister added.

"China is very much concerned about the situation in Myanmar, because Myanmar is our close neighbor," Wen said at the meeting with Myanmar's Prime Minister Thein Sein. China sincerely hopes all parties concerned in Myanmar will enhance dialogue and promote reconciliation, he said. China proposes that the future of Myanmar be decided by the Myanmar people themselves and the international community offer constructive assistance for the country to achieve democracy, stability and development, he added. Wen said China will continue to support the mediation efforts by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his special envoy Ibrahim Gambari, and play an active role in the appropriate resolution of the Myanmar issue.

China is willing to strengthen economic cooperation with Myanmar for the benefits of the two peoples, he added.

Myanmar will continue to push forward the seven-point road map plan for national reconciliation, he added. The prime minister said Myanmar appreciates the responsible and constructive role that China is playing in resolving the Myanmar issue.
