Indonesian President Meets with State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan

On November 5, 2004, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met at the Presidential Palace with Chinese President Hu Jintao's Special Representative and State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, who was on a working visit to Indonesia.

Tang Jiaxuan conveyed warm congratulations and best wishes from President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao for the inauguration of President Susilo. He also delivered President Hu's autograph letter to invite President Susilo to visit China and indicated the Chinese leaders look forward to meeting with him on the earliest date possible.

Susilo welcomed the visit by Tang Jiaxuan as Special Representative of President Hu, thanked the congratulations from Chinese leaders and accepted the invitation to visit China with pleasure. Susilo enthusiastically invited President Hu to visit Indonesia next year and said he expects the meeting with President Hu and Premier Wen and hopes to take this visit as an opportunity to push bilateral ties to a new level.

Tang Jiaxuan noted that China and Indonesia are friendly neighbors and both of them are large developing countries with great influence. Developing China-Indonesia relations is the common interests of both countries and conducive to regional peace, stability and prosperity, as well as promoting the unity and cooperation among developing countries. The Chinese leaders and government attach great importance to the relations with Indonesia and highly appreciate President Susilo's initiatives on developing bilateral ties. Tang Jiaxuan made the following proposals. The two countries should strengthen exchanges among leaders and push for the development of China-Indonesia relations from a long-term, strategic perspective; continue mutual outstanding and support on issues related to the important interests of the two countries; vigorously explore bilateral economic and trade cooperation and deepen collaboration in non-traditional security area; continue to jointly promote the development of China-ASEAN ties as well as unity and cooperation among developing countries. Tang appreciates Indonesia for resolutely adhering to the one-China policy and said that China will continue supporting the Indonesian government's efforts to safeguard national unity and stability and supporting Indonesia to hold the Asian-African Summit and the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the convening of Bandung Conference next year. Tang pointed out that next year, which marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, should be set as the Year of Friendship between China and Indonesia.

Susilo fully agreed to China's proposals on developing China-Indonesia ties. He said that the new Indonesian government and he himself give top priority to China's role in international and regional affairs and to ASEAN-China strategic partnership and sincerely hope to further enhance the all-round friendly ties with China. The two counties should conduct closer exchanges among leaders, expand cooperation between the two governments and hold broad people-to-people communication. He thanked China for helping Indonesia's economic development and indicated his country would like to work together with China to push economic and trade relations to a new level. Susilo reaffirmed that the Indonesian government will continue following the one-China policy.

During his visit, Tang also met respectively with Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security Affairs Wiranto and Foreign Minister Nur Hassan Wirajuda. The relevant departments of the two countries signed the Agreement on China-Indonesia Economic Cooperation and Agreement on China Export & Import Bank Offering Indonesia's Suramadu Bridge Export Buyer's Credit.
