On March 29, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, sent a telegraph to his Indonesia counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the powerful earthquake taking place in the western sea of Sumatra, Indonesia which caused heavy losses of life and property, extending deep grief over the victimized and sincere condolence to the families of the dead. Hu also noted that he believes under the leadership of President Susilo the Indonesian government and people will surely defeat this natural disaster.
