President Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Indonesian President Susilo

2005/07/28

On the afternoon of July 28, 2005, President Hu Jintao held talks with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the Great Hall of the People. The two heads of state exchanged in-depth views on the bilateral relations and the international and regional issues of common concern and reached a series of important consensus on further strengthening cooperation in the bilateral and multilateral areas and jointly pushing for progress of the bilateral strategic partnership.

Hu made highly positive comments on China-Indonesia relations, saying that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Over 55 years the bilateral relations have achieved long-term progress. In particular, in recent years the leaders of the two countries have maintained frequent exchanges of visits and deepened mutual understanding and friendship. The bilateral exchanges and cooperation in such fields as politics, economy and trade, culture and education, military affairs and security have been strengthened comprehensively and both sides coordinated and collaborated with each other closely in the international and regional affairs. We admire the Indonesian government's adherence to the one-China policy and consistently support Indonesia's efforts of fighting against the separatist and terrorist forces, maintaining national unity and stability and promoting economic development.

The establishment of China-Indonesia strategic partnership is a milestone in the history of bilateral relations, pointed out Hu. He expressed hope that both countries take the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties as a new start point to carry on the traditional friendship, accelerate the mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields in a down-to-earth manner and constantly enrich the connotation of bilateral strategic partnership in a bid to benefit the two countries and their people.

Susilo said that the Indonesian government firmly pursues the one-China policy and thanked China for its consistent support for Indonesian government's efforts of maintaining national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The establishment of strategic partnership between the two countries in April this year during President Hu Jintao's visit to Indonesia has opened promising prospects for the friendly cooperation between the two sides. The Indonesian government will remain committed to reinforcing and enriching its strategic partnership with China.

Hu proposed the suggestions of strengthening the bilateral high-level exchanges and strategic dialogue and consultation and formulating a joint action plan to further implement the strategic partnership; advancing bilateral cooperation in the key economic and trade areas including infrastructure, energy and resources exploitation, telecommunications and communications, agriculture, forestry and fishery and the construction of big projects and accelerating the establishment of the bilateral investment promotion mechanism; improving the marine cooperation mechanism covering navigation safety, ocean environment protection and marine security; launching the consultation mechanism of national defense and enhancing cooperation in the areas of post-disaster reconstruction, disaster relief and culture, education and tourism as well.

Susilo expressed complete agreement with the cooperation areas and related measures suggested by Hu, noting that the rapid growth of bilateral trade volume and constant expansion of cooperative areas well demonstrate the dynamism and potential of bilateral friendly relations. He said that the concessional loans and assistance offered by China has well served the socioeconomic progress and post-disaster reconstruction of Indonesia. The Indonesian government will make joint efforts with China to uplift the friendly cooperation in politics, economy and trade, investment, tourism, education, culture, international affairs and other areas in an all-round manner.

Hu noted that the success of the 2005 Asia-Africa Summit and the celebrations on the 50th anniversary of the Bandung Conference have injected new energy into South-South cooperation. China expects to work with all parties related including Indonesia to implement the declaration on the building of a new strategic partnership between Asia and Africa, push forward cooperation in the areas of politics, economy, society and culture between Asian and African countries and make unremitting efforts to build peace, stability, development and prosperity on the two continents.

Susilo thanked China's great support for Asia-Africa Summit, saying that ASEAN thinks highly of China's positive role in the international and regional affairs and to constantly strengthen cooperation with China is beneficial to peace, stability and development in Asia.

Both sides also exchanged opinions and reached wide consensus on current major international issues.

Following the talks, the two heads of state attended the signing ceremony of the agreement on economic and technological cooperation and other bilateral cooperation documents.

Prior to the talks, Hu held a welcome ceremony for Susilo's visit to China in the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Also present at the ceremony were Hu's wife Liu Yongqing, Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan of the State Council, Vice Chairwoman Gu Xiulian of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Vice Chairman Xu Kuangdi of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairwoman Zhang Rongming of the Central Committee of China National Democratic Construction Association, Minister Ma Kai of the National Development and Reform Commission and other officials.
