On July 4, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda in Jakarta. Yang said China and Indonesia are friendly neighbors and to establish a strategic partnership between the two countries is a strategic choice made by both sides, which helps set a framework for comprehensive and in-depth development of bilateral ties in the new century. Currently both sides have conducted all-round cooperation on politics, economy, society and culture, as well as in international affairs, he said. Deepening bilateral ties conforms to common interests of both sides and is also conducive to peace and prosperity of this region, said Yang. He expressed China's willingness to closely cooperate with Indonesia to enrich and expand their strategic partnership. Hassan said relations with China are very important. Recent years have witnessed frequent high-level visits, rapidly growing bilateral trade and investment and smooth judicial and defense cooperation between the two countries. The Indonesian foreign minister pledged his country will continue to contribute to developing strategic partnership with China. Hassan reiterated Indonesia's adherence to the one-China policy and support of China's reunification, which Yang appreciated. During the talks, both sides agreed to make a plan of joint action on strategic partnership as soon as possible to chart bilateral cooperation in an all-round manner. They also pledged to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation on infrastructure construction, agriculture, fishery, energy security and environmental protection, enhance exchanges between defense departments and advance cultural and educational cooperation. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern. Following the talks, the two foreign ministers signed an agreement on economic and technological cooperation. The Chinese foreign minister arrived in Jakarta on the afternoon of July 4 for a visit to Indonesia after concluding his three-day visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
