Indonesian President Meets with Yang Jiechi

On July 5, 2007, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in the presidential palace in Jakarta. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on bilateral ties and other international and regional issues. Susilo spoke highly of the development of Sino-Indonesian relationship, saying that the leaders of both countries had regular meetings and reached consensus on concerned international issues, injecting new vitalities into bilateral ties. He said both sides have conducted smooth cooperation on politics, economy, culture and diplomacy and share the same or similar views on major regional and international issues. Susilo said Indonesia is expecting to strengthen strategic partnership with China in the fields of politics, economy and trade, energy and culture. He also hoped that Indonesia can do something positive to promote relations between China and ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and strengthen coordination and cooperation with China in international affairs. Yang said the development of friendly relations between China and Indonesia enjoys a sound momentum with fruitful cooperation in all areas, thanks to the great importance leaders of both countries attach to bilateral ties. Yang said that Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Susilo agreed on setting up China-Indonesia strategic partnership in 2005, which paved the way for the two countries to develop their relations in the 21st century. China is ready to work with Indonesia to maintain high-level visits, deepen trade cooperation and expand exchanges on security, culture, science and technology, said Yang. He also urged both sides to contribute to China-EU strategic cooperation and advance China-Bulgaria strategic partnership so as to bring benefit to both peoples and promote world peace and development. Susilo also emphasized that Indonesia had strictly pursued the one-China policy, and the policy would not change. Yang expressed appreciation on Indonesia's position. On the same day, Yang also met with Coordinating Minister for Political, Law and Security Affairs of Indonesia Widodo Adi Sutjipto, who is also the initiator of the Indonesian side for China-Indonesia dialogue mechanism of vice premier level. Both sides made positive comments on bilateral ties and on the important contributions the dialogue mechanism has made to deepening bilateral strategic partnership, vowing to work together to give full play to the role of the mechanism and push for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. The Chinese foreign minister arrived at Jakarta on the afternoon of July 4 after a three-day visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
