China and Japan Hold Consultation on the Reform of the United Nations

Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai and Director of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of Foreign Ministry Wu Hailong met with Director of the Foreign Policy Bureau of Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chikao Kawai respectively on March 14, 2007, exchanging opinions on the reform of the United Nations (UN). Both sides expressed support for the organization in playing a greater role of maintaining world peace and promoting common development and agreed to strengthen dialogue to that end. The Chinese side stressed that the UN reform is all-round and involves wide areas. The reform of the Security Council is related to the interest of all parties and the widest consensus should be reached continuously through full and patient democratic consultation.
