Yang Jiechi Attends China, ROK and Japan Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On June 3, 2007, the China, ROK and Japan Foreign Ministers' meeting was held in Jeju Island, ROK. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his ROK counterpart Song Min-soon and Japanese counterpart Aso Taro attended the meeting, where they exchanged views on the orientation for future development of trilateral cooperation and cooperation in some particular fields, as well as on international and regional issues of common concern. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said that the three Asian countries have shared interests, needs, responsibilities and objectives in terms of maintaining a peaceful Asia, promoting common development and building harmony in the region. With a strategic focus, the three nations should seize the opportunity to improve and develop trilateral ties and expand cooperation and exchanges, he said. If the three nations could settle disputes through dialogue they would become mutually beneficial and win-win partners, who enjoy shared interests and development opportunities in the joint efforts of revitalizing Asia and realizing peace, development, cooperation and harmony around the world, he added. The three foreign ministers agreed that strengthened trilateral dialogue and cooperation between the ROK, China and Japan are of great significance to safeguarding the peace and stability of the region and promoting common development since the three are all influential countries in Asia. The three ministers pledged to bear in mind the overall development of friendly relations to promote mutual political trust and intensify reciprocal cooperation. The three countries should strengthen communication and coordination in advancing East Asian cooperation and resolving major international and regional issues to play an active, constructive role in this regard, they added. They also agreed to bolster trilateral exchanges and cooperation in such areas as investment, energy, aviation, environmental protection, climate change, culture and the media. At the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also elaborated about Chinese positions on relevant issues. While discussing the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and security in northeast Asia, the three ministers reiterated their hope for an early resolution to the DRPK funds issue involving Macao-based Banco Delta Asia. They also expressed hope that the initial actions can be implemented as soon as possible, to push for continuous progress of six-party talks and achieve denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. They urged efforts to be made to realize normalization of relations between relevant countries, as well as long-term peace and stability in northeast Asia. The three sides expressed willingness to maintain communication and cooperation to this end. On the same day, Yang also met separately with Song Min-soon and Taro Aso, exchanging views on strengthening bilateral dialogue and cooperation, as well as consultations and coordination in international and regional affairs.
