Statement by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhang Qiyue on the Paying of Homage to the Yasukuni Shrine by Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi

2002/04/21

The Chinese side opposes to the paying of homage to the Yasukuni Shrine, which contains tablets of Class-A war criminals, by Japanese leaders at any time and in whatever capacity. We wish to express our strong dissatisfaction at the action by the Japanese leader this time. The Japanese action can only damage Japan's own image, making it even more difficult for Japan to win the trust of the people of the Asian countries on the question of history.
