Wen Jiabao Meets with His Laotian Counterpart Bouasone

2006/10/31

On October 31, 2006, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met in Nanning with Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh on the sidelines of the China-ASEAN Commemorative Summit marking the 15th anniversary of the establishment of Dialogue Relations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Wen appreciated Laos's firm support to China on the Taiwan, Tibet and human rights questions. Wen said the China-Laos relationship was at its all-time high, and that China was willing to make further efforts to push forward the comprehensive and in-depth development of the relations.

Wen said in recent years bilateral economic and trade ties have made great progress with the trade volume growing by a large margin and some major cooperation projects developing steadily. China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Laos in fields like infrastructure, hydropower and mineral resources based on the principles of "equality, mutual benefit, seeking tangible effects, various forms and common development". As for the construction of a Mekong River bridge, which connects Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province in southern China, and the Thai capital of Bangkok, Wen said China would positively consider cooperating with Laos, Asian Development Bank and Thailand to provide financial support to the project. China will also continue to offer assistance for Laos's national development within its available resources.

Bouasone said the Sino-Lao friendly cooperation is the cooperation between good neighbors, friends and partners. Laos would firmly adhere to the one-China policy, and appreciates the active role China had played in promoting peace and development of the world, he said. Laos is ready to maintain high-level visits with China to exchange views on developing bilateral ties. He hoped China to continue participating actively in Laos's economic development and deepen bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Bouasone also hoped to strengthen youth exchanges and build up traditional friendship between both countries.
