On November 20, 2006, Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chinese President, met in Vientiane with Khamtay Siphandone, the former Lao president and former president of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

Hu briefed Khamtay on the results achieved during his talks with Choummaly and the consensus they reached, saying this successful visit will further promote development of bilateral ties and build up the friendship between the two peoples. Hu said Khamtay, an old friend of the Chinese people, has made remarkable contributions to the relations between the two parties and countries, expressing hope he will continue to show care and support for the development of the ties.

Khamtay congratulated on the success of Hu's current visit, saying that it demonstrates the profound friendship between the two peoples and serves as a new milestone in bilateral ties. China's assistance has played an important role in Laos's efforts to get rid of poverty, build an industrialized country and increase job opportunities, he said. He hoped both sides attach great importance to education of youth, and do a good job in the dispatch of Chinese volunteers to Laos to lay a solid foundation for long-term friendship between the two peoples.
