On November 20, 2006, Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chinese President, met with Lao National Assembly President Thongsing Thammavong in Vientiane. China and Laos have been friendly neighbors since ancient times, and recent years have witnessed the all-around and in-depth development of the relationship between the two countries and two parties, Hu said. To strengthen Sino-Lao good neighborly friendship and comprehensive cooperation is the common aspiration of both sides, as well as an objective need to advance the two countries' socialist cause. The Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government stand ready to work with their Lao counterparts to promote their all-around cooperative relations of long-term stability, good-neighborliness and mutual trust to a new height, said Hu. Thongsing said Hu's current visit will help consolidate the foundation of bilateral ties, promote friendly and comprehensive cooperation and usher in a new stage for the development of the relations. Thongsing thanked for the precious support and assistance from China, which, he said, greatly helped the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (PRP), the Lao government and people with their national development. China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the Lao National Assembly have maintained friendly exchanges, and have scored sound effects in exchange of theory and experience concerning building socialist democracy and legal system, Hu said. China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the Lao National Assembly face the same task of fostering socialist democracy and strengthening the socialist legal system in their respective countries, Hu said, adding that it was important for the two sides to increase exchanges. China is ready to work with Laos to continue all-round friendly exchanges between the two legislatures, and strengthen contacts in the areas of legislation and supervision, he noted. Lauding the existing good cooperative ties between both sides, Thongsing said China's NPC has offered precious experience to the Lao National Assembly, helping improve its legislative efficiency. He expressed the hope that the two sides would expand exchanges, maintain the high-level exchange of visits by the legislative bodies of the two countries and strengthen cooperation in the training of the Lao National Assembly carders. For his part, Thongsing said the Lao National Assembly will do its utmost to implement the important achievements of Hu's current visit to push for friendly cooperation. Prior to the talks, Hu laid a wreath at the tomb of unknown soldiers of Laos. Wang Gang, Alternate Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and other accompanying officials attended these activities.
