Wen Jiabao Holds Talks with Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone

On August 23, 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks at the Great Hall of the People with visiting Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, during which both sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral ties and reached broad consensus. Wen spoke highly of bilateral ties, saying that China and Laos are good neighbors, good friends and good partners. Over the years, the relations have been developing steadily under the guidance of the principle of "long-term stability, good-neighborly friendship, mutual trust and all-round cooperation". Both countries have currently maintained solid political trust, fruitful trade cooperation and close coordination in international and regional affairs, Wen added. Wen said the Chinese government cherishes its friendship with Laos and attaches importance to developing ties with the country, expressing willingness to further strengthen all-round cooperation between the two countries to upgrade bilateral ties to a new level. He also hoped the leaders of the two countries could keep close contact and exchange views on issues of common concern in a timely manner. Wen urged both sides to exchange experience on how to govern a country through more exchange of visits, workshops, lectures and other forms for the sake of promoting social and economic development of both countries. Premier Wen suggested the two countries enhance economic and trade cooperation, focusing on areas like agriculture, infrastructure, energy and mining. He also called for exploring new cooperation modes and expanding new cooperation channels to maintain sustained, stable development of trade ties, adding that the two countries should expand educational exchanges and human resources training. The two countries should jointly push forward Mekong River subregional cooperation and fight against transnational crimes, said Wen. Bouasone said the two countries share traditional friendship and have shown mutual understanding and trust for each other with good-neighborly friendly cooperation making new progress continuously. In recent years, both sides have expanded mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas with rapidly growing economic and trade cooperation. He spoke highly of the sound cooperation between Laos and China on education, personnel training, health care and Mekong River management, saying the two sides have seen fruitful cooperation in such security areas as jointly fighting transnational crimes and drugs and have kept mutual support and close coordination in regional and international affairs. Bouasone extended thanks for China's various forms of assistance for his country's economic and social development, saying the two countries will further cooperation on trade, hydro-power, science and technology, education and culture in a bid to push for comprehensive development of bilateral ties. Bouasone reiterated Laos' adherence to the one-China policy and support of China's peaceful reunification. Following the talks, the two leaders jointly attended a signing ceremony of several cooperation agreements concerning economy, technology, animal and plant health and food safety. Prior to the talks, Wen Jiabao hosted a welcoming ceremony for Bouasone's visit at the Square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People. Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League Li Chong'an, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Vice-Chairman of State Development and Reform Commission Chen Deming, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Pan Guangxue and other officials attended the ceremony.
