Lao President Choummaly and Prime Minister Bouasone Meet Respectively with Yang Jiechi

On December 9, 2007, Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone and Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh met respectively with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Vientaine. During his meeting with Choummaly on the afternoon of the same day, Yang said with the care and guidance of leaders from the two parties and two countries, both sides have strengthened their traditional friendship and all-round cooperation and supported and cooperated with each other in international and regional affairs, thus safeguarding the fundamental interests of the two peoples. He pointed out that both China and Laos uphold the path of socialism and reform and opening up and face the same task of developing economy and improving people's living standard. Therefore, enhancing China-Laos ties is of great significance, he said, adding China will work with Laos to push forward bilateral ties based on the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, in a bid to benefit both peoples and contribute to peace, stability and development in the region. Choummaly spoke highly of bilateral ties, saying that frequent exchanges between the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) and fruitful cooperation in economy, trade and many other areas between the two countries will help Laos reduce poverty. He hoped that both sides will continue to strengthen inter-party and inter-department exchanges and enhance cooperation on economy, trade and human resources training, in a bid to push bilateral ties towards the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries. He said he appreciates China's positive role in international affairs and hopes to strengthen communication and coordination between the two sides on regional and global issues and also to promote ties between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). On the morning of the same day, Bouasone also met with Yang Jiechi. Both sides made positive comments on bilateral ties and focused their discussion on economic and trade cooperation. Yang pointed out that in recent years, bilateral trade has kept growing. Cooperation has been strengthened in the fields of infrastructure construction, energy and mineral production with key cooperation projects well under way and close border and regional trade exchanges. Yang said for the next phase both sides should focus on broadening bilateral trade, speeding up progress in existing cooperation projects and promoting energy, mineral exploitation projects, as well as economic ties at local levels. Yang also stressed that China will cooperate actively in next year's Third Summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program, which is to be hosted by Laos, so that the summit would be successful. Echoing Yang's views and suggestions, Bouasone said the Laos-China economic and trade relations are developing rapidly, with Chinese enterprises playing a leading role in Laos' foreign investment. He told the Chinese foreign minister that economic and trade ties with China are very important to Laos in its achieving targets outlined in the sixth five-year national development plan. He hoped that both sides will well implement relevant projects as well as the agreements reached by both sides through coordination and cooperation. Laos is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in the Greater-Mekong sub-region economy, as well as the ASEAN+3 framework, said the Lao prime minister. On the afternoon of the same day, Yang also held talks with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith.
