Jia Qinglin Meets with Malaysian Prime Minister Badawi

On March 29, 2006, Chairman Jia Qinglin of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met with Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Kuala Lumpur. Jia conveyed the greetings from Premier Wen Jiabao to Badawi and Badawi asked Jia to convey his cordial greetings and best wishes to Wen.

Jia said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly. Both sides have always shown mutual understanding and respect for each other and treated each other as equals. Both sides have kept close high-level exchanges with mutual trust increasingly strengthened, which has laid a solid political basis for sustainable and steady development of bilateral relations. Bilateral cooperation in the areas of economy & trade, military affairs, tourism, science & technology, education and culture has continuously scored new achievements and brought more benefits to both countries and their people. Mr. Prime Minister and the Malaysian government attach great importance to and actively develop relations with China and resolutely pursue the one-China policy, which China highly appreciates.

Jia said that Malaysia is China's important partner in ASEAN. With in-depth advancing of bilateral strategic cooperation, the development of bilateral relations is faced with a new sound opportunity. China would like to make joint efforts with Malaysia to push bilateral good-neighborly relations to develop in a new depth and width and make both sides good friends that rely on each other and good partners in mutually beneficial cooperation forever. Jia made proposals on further developing bilateral relations in the following four aspects.

First, to strengthen bilateral high-level exchanges and contact between all social walks of life of both countries, continuously build up mutual political trust and enhance understanding and friendship. The CPPCC is a pool of excellent representatives from all nationalities, parties and stratums and plays an important role in state political life and foreign exchanges. China would like to strengthen friendly exchanges with all social walks of life of Malaysia through this platform, promote cooperation and make positive contributions to development of bilateral relations and the friendship between both peoples.

Second, to deepen economic and trade cooperation and realize mutual benefits. Both sides should maintain the rapid development momentum of economic and trade cooperation, strongly advance cooperation in infrastructure construction, tourism and other major areas and strive to fulfill in advance the bilateral trade target of over 50 billion US dollars for 2010. China encourages its businesses to invest and develop in Malaysia and welcomes Malaysian businesses to participate in development of the western and northeastern parts of China.

Third, to actively develop energy cooperation and enrich connotation of bilateral relations. Both sides should give play to their respective advantages in the areas of resources and market and push related cooperation programs to bear early fruits. Efforts should also be made to actively discuss approaches and ways for joint exploitation of South China Sea in the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits and make South China Sea a bond for bilateral energy cooperation.

Fourth, to strengthen coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs and safeguard and promote just rights and interest of developing nations. The summit in celebration of the 15th anniversary of China-ASEAN relations is to be held in Nanning this October and China would like to work with all ASEAN countries including Malaysia to take this summit as an opportunity and push for greater development of bilateral relations.

Badawi agreed with Jia's comments and proposals on bilateral relations. He said that both sides are friendly neighbors and have conducted continuous exchanges at all levels with sound development in bilateral relations. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation has entered a stage of all-round development and related cooperation programs in the energy area have also made positive headway and promoted development of both countries. Malaysia has always taken developing relations with China as a top priority and would like to maintain exchanges of high-level visits with China, strengthen cooperation in the areas of economy & trade, energy, investment and infrastructure construction and further enrich cooperative forms, channels and content so that bilateral relations and mutually beneficial cooperation will yield more results.

Malaysia agrees with and supports the agencies of friendship and commerce of the two countries to play a greater role in pushing for bilateral friendship and economic and trade cooperation and encourage their businesses to jointly explore market. Malaysia would like to continue discussing with China issues related to joint exploitation of South China Sea in a cooperative spirit. Badawi reaffirmed that the Malaysian government will as always adhere to the one-China policy.
