Li Zhaoxing Holds Talks with Maldivian Foreign Ministe

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held talks with Maldivian acting Foreign Minister Ahmed Abdulla in Maldives on April 2 2005.

Li Zhaoxing said since the establishment of diplomatic ties 33 years ago, the exchanges and cooperation between China and Maldives in every field are expanding. China thanks Maldives for its firm support to China on the issue of Taiwan, Tibet and human rights. China is willing to work together with Maldives to push bilateral relations forward.

Abdulla introduced the tsunami situation at the end of last year and thanked the Chinese government and people for the timely assistance. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, Maldives-China relations are getting increasingly closer, with exchanges and cooperation in every field constantly expanding, and trade volumes rapidly increasing in recent years. He expressed that the Maldivian government will firmly uphold the one-China policy. He also positively commented on the achievements China made in the economic construction and hoped to learn from China's development experience.

On the same day, Li Zhaoxing visited the National Disaster Management Center of Maldives and exchanged views on China's continued participation in the post-tsunami reconstruction efforts of Maldives with Ismail Shafeeu, Minister of Defense and National Security, and Chair of Disaster Relief Task Force and Mohamed Jaleel, Minister of Finance and Treasury of Maldives. Li Zhaoxing also called on the engineering and technical staffs of Shanghai Construction Group, which is the contract constructor of the building for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.
