Wen Jiabao Meets with Burmese Prime Minister Soe Win

On December 14, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Burmese Prime Minister Soe Win in Kuala Lumpur.

Wen said that bilateral relations have always been developing very well with the cooperation in various areas continuously deepened and strengthened. To develop bilateral friendship is an important part of China's foreign policy. China will as always pursue its friendly policy to Burma, deepen all-round cooperation at all levels and push for in-depth development of bilateral relations.

Wen said that both economies are highly complementary to each other and bilateral cooperation in agriculture, human and natural resources development, infrastructure construction and other major areas has scored important achievements. It is hoped that both sides will implement related programs and agreements and strengthen cooperation in the areas of trade, investment and energy.

Soe Win agreed with Wen's comments on bilateral relations. He said that China has offered precious support for Burma's economic development, for which Burma expressed thanks. Both sides share a lot of common interest and it is hoped that both sides will deepen mutually beneficial cooperation according to the consensus and agreements already agreed upon.

Both sides agreed to strengthen narcotics control cooperation.

Soe Win briefed Wen on Burma's internal situation. Wen indicated that what happened inside Burma is its internal affairs and should be properly handled by the Burmese government and people independently through consultations and the international community should offer constructive assistance for Burma to independently resolve its domestic issue. It is believed that the Burmese government and people can successfully resolve its own issue and advance the process of domestic national reconciliation.
