Wu Bangguo Meets with Prime Minister of Myanmar Soe Win, Talking about the Development of Bilateral Friendly Relations

On February 15, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Prime Minister of Myanmar Soe Win in the Great Hall of the People. Wu said that the friendship between both peoples goes back to ancient times. Both sides have shown sympathy and support for each other in safeguarding state sovereignty and national dignity. The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence jointly proposed by the two countries still remain basic norms for handling international relations to this day. Wu said that China cherishes good-neighborly friendship between both sides and would like to make joint efforts with Myanmar to continuously expand and enrich the connotations of bilateral relations and jointly realize development and prosperity. Wu briefed the guest on China's economic and social developments, as well as its democracy and rule of law. He said that both countries are developing nations and faced with the task of rejuvenating economy and improving people's livelihood. Both sides can strengthen exchanges and learn from each other. Soe Win indicated that Myanmar would like to steadily consolidate and develop the traditional friendship between both countries and strengthen friendly cooperation in various areas. He reaffirmed that Myanmar resolutely adheres to the one-China position. Soe Win appreciated the important role played by the NPC of China in national social and economic development. He also introduced the developments of Myanmar's national reconciliation and indicated that his country would like to learn from China's practice and experience.
