Premier Zhu Rongji Met With Nepalese King Gyanendra

On the afternoon of July 11, 2002, Premier Zhu Rongji met with Nepalese King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev at Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

On the part of the Chinese government, Zhu extended a warm welcome to King Gyanendra for his visit to China, and wishes his current visit a satisfactory success. Zhu said that President Jiang Zemin and King Gyanendra have reached many important agreements on Sino-Nepalese relations in their friendly and fruitful talks. The Chinese government will actively implement these agreements, in order to push forward the friendly cooperative relations between the two countries.

Zhu said that he believes the king's successful visit to China will have a very important and positive impact on the future of bilateral ties.

Zhu said that during his visit to Nepal last year, the two countries signed several documents on cooperation and reached agreements on some concrete issues, which are steadily implemented by the departments in charge on the Chinese side. A special procurement team dispatched by Chinese foreign trade departments to Nepal has bought a lot of Nepalese goods. Cooperation projects on infrastructure including roads construction have been launched smoothly, and the contracting business undertaken by Chinese companies in Nepal has gone on smoothly, to the satisfaction of the Chinese side. Zhu said that the Chinese Government will encourage and support more Chinese businesses to conduct trade and economic activities in Nepal, and make benefits for the Nepalese people by participating in the economic construction of Nepal.

Zhu also said that the Chinese Government understands and supports the series of policy measures by the Nepalese king and government aimed at safeguarding independence and territorial integrity and maintaining social stability and economic development.

King Gyanendra highly evaluated the achievements made in his current visit. He said that he will uphold the friendly foreign policy towards China initiated by his late father and brother. The king said that his country will spare no effort to keep relations of mutual support and trust alive between Nepal and China, and expressed his willingness of further exploring friendly cooperation between the two countries in various fields on the existing basis. Praising China as a great neighbor of Nepal's and China's economic achievements, he said that Nepal feels glad and hopes to learn from China's experience. Nepal said that Nepal hopes to see more Chinese citizens traveling in Nepal and more entrepreneurs pursue their causes in Nepal. He also said that the Nepalese government and the people thank China for its understanding and support for its efforts in fighting against terrorism and violent activities and resolving social and economic difficulties.

King Gyanendra also expressed his satisfaction and thanks to the Chinese side for their considerate arrangements and warm hospitality during his visit to China.
