2008/01/05

On the evening of January 5, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held a telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Inamul Haq, exchanging views on Pakistan's current situation.

Yang said that a stable Pakistan serves not only the national interests of Pakistan, but also the common interests of this region and the international community.   China hopes that Pakistan will hold its parliamentary elections successfully, Yang said.  China believes that under the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf and the Pakistani government, the Pakistani people can overcome temporary difficulties and remain united so as to maintain social stability and national development, Yang said.

Haq expressed appreciation for China's support to and understanding of Pakistan at such a difficult time, saying that the Pakistani government has been working to ensure that the parliamentary elections be held successfully.   The Pakistani government has also committed itself to further promoting democracy and maintaining the country's stability and development, said Haq.
