President Hu Jintao Meets with His Philippine Counterpart Arroyo

On October 2, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Shanghai Xijiao Guest House with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is here to attend the opening ceremony of the 12th Special Olympics Summer Games. Hu first extended welcome to Arroyo, who came to China for the opening ceremony of the 12th Special Olympics Summer Games. Arroyo thanked the Chinese side for inviting her to the opening ceremony, saying that her country attaches importance to the Games and has sent its largest-ever Special Olympics delegation to the Games. She wished the Games a complete success. On China-Philippines relations, Hu said China gives priority to ties with the Philippines and is ready to work with it to push for bilateral ties. Currently the two countries enjoy sound relations and their leaders have met on a regular basis on issues of common concern. Recent years have witnessed fruitful cooperation on economy and trade, giving strong impetus to the development of bilateral ties, said Hu. The two countries have given full play to their advantages to enhance the level of economic and trade cooperation, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples, he said. China is ready to continue strengthening economic and trade cooperation with the Philippines based on the principle of mutual benefits. Relevant agencies of the two countries are drafting a joint action plan on strategic cooperation and departments in the economic and trade field are also working on a five-year plan for economic and trade cooperation. The Chinese president expressed hope that both sides will speed up consultations to reach consensus at an early date, thus providing concrete guidance for mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas. Arroyo said China's growth is an important opportunity for her country's development. China-Philippines relationship, as one of the highlights in the Philippines' diplomatic relations, is getting more and more comprehensive and mature based on mutual trust, mutual respect and candid dialogue. Bilateral cooperation in all areas is expanding and deepening continuously, she said, expressing the hope that both sides will continue to strengthen pragmatic cooperation in all fields. Arroyo emphasized that the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole China and the Philippines sticks to the one-China policy. Hu expressed appreciation for such a stance. Vice Premier Hui Liangyu and State Councilor Chen Zhili attended the meeting.
