On April 22, Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong met with Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, who was attending the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2006, in Boao, Hainan. Zeng said to Wickremanayake that both countries are traditional friendly neighbors and the exchanges between the two peoples go back to ancient times. In early 1950s when the two countries had not established diplomatic ties, they signed the Agreement on Rice for Rubber, which shows sincere mutual assistance between the two peoples. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1957, generations of leaderships and far-sighted personages of the two countries have thrown all their energy into bilateral ties with mutual political trust continuously strengthened and both sides have expanded cooperation in the economic and trade area, built up friendship between both peoples and shown mutual understanding and support in international and regional affairs. The Chinese government appreciates the government of Sri Lanka for adhering to the one-China policy for a long period of time and offering precious support to China on Taiwan, Tibet and other questions involving China's core interest. China also understands and supports efforts of the government of Sri Lanka in safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity. Zeng also put forward suggestions on further advancing development of bilateral relations in the following four aspects. First, to further build up understanding and friendship between the two governments and peoples. Second, to expand exchanges and cooperation in all areas and realize mutual benefits. Third, to give consideration to each other's concerns on issues related to key national interest. Fourth, to continue mutual coordination in international and regional affairs. Wickremanayake made positive comments on the history and status quo of development of bilateral relations. He said that next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapakse will also visit China. Sri Lanka hopes to strengthen bilateral exchanges in various areas through a range of cerebrations and further promote development of bilateral ties. Wickremanayake indicated that the government of Sri Lanka supports China's position on the Taiwan question and does not support any forms of secessionist activities.
