Tang Jiaxuan Holds Talks with Thai Deputy Prime Minister

2005/11/21

On November 21, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan held talks in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai, who was here in China on a working visit.

Tang noted that both sides have continuously deepened mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas and bilateral relations have maintained momentum of steady development. Both sides should work together to step up efforts in implementing the important consensus between their Prime Ministers on formulating an action plan of bilateral strategic cooperation.

Tang made highly positive comments on sound coordination and cooperation between both sides in international and regional affairs and emphasized that China would like to strengthen cooperation with Thailand and ASEAN countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits and support ASEAN to play a leading role in the process of regional cooperation.

Tang pointed out that in the Outcome Document adopted at the Summit on the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the United Nations (UN) is embodied the consensus of all sides and the task of top priority is to translate consensus into action. The purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be safeguarded in the reform of the UN and the reform should be conducted in the principle of addressing easier problems before moving on to thornier ones and gradual progress so as to score positive achievements. Priority of the reform should be given to resolving development issues interested by the great majority of developing countries and pushing for the realization of the Millennium Development Goal.

Surakiart indicated that the Thai government attaches great importance to relations with China and resolutely pursues the one-China policy. Thailand will continue committing to developing strategic cooperation with China in various areas. Thailand appreciates China for its active role in regional cooperation. On the UN reform and other major issues, Thailand would like to further strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China and push the UN to better fulfill obligations and missions entrusted by the UN Charter.

Both sides also exchanged views on other issues of common interest.
