2007/05/28

On the afternoon of May 28, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont at the Great Hall of the People. Both sides held talks in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.

Hu spoke highly of China-Thailand relations and appreciated the Thai royal family and government for attaching importance to ties with China and adhering to the one-China policy. Hu said the two countries had enjoyed a sound and deepening development of relations marked by sincere treatment, mutual trust and close cooperation on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence since the establishment of diplomatic ties 32 years ago. The China-Thailand friendship has become valuable treasure shared by the two countries and their people and is also a good example of China's harmonious and reciprocal relations with neighboring countries, said Hu.

Hu pointed out that China regarded Thailand as a close, trustworthy and cooperative friend, and respected the development path chosen by the Thai people. The Chinese government would maintain its friendship with Thailand despite changes in the international situation and the two countries' domestic circumstances, he said. The signing of an action plan for strategic cooperation is a major move of both sides to deepen bilateral ties, injecting vitality into the development of the relations in the new century. Hu hoped that both sides would conduct close coordination, seriously implement the tasks in the plan and push bilateral cooperation for early results for the benefit of the two countries and their people.

Surayud said China and Thailand have established special friendly, close ties since the establishment of diplomatic ties 32 years ago. Surayud expressed gratitude for the consistent support and understanding of the Chinese government for Thailand. He said the Thai government was ready to take the action plan for strategic cooperation as an opportunity to enhance strategic relations, deepen cooperation of mutual benefits in all areas and push the friendly cooperation for more fruitful results. Surayud reaffirmed the Thai government's adherence to the one-China policy. He also made positive comments on China's constructive role in international and regional affairs, expressing willingness to continue close coordination and cooperation with China.

Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Zhang Jiuhuan and other officials attended the meeting.
