Chinese President Hu Jintao Meets with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman

On the afternoon of April 10, 2007, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong at the Great Hall of the People. During the meeting, Hu spoke highly of the achievements made in the development of the relations between the two parties and countries. He said that to consolidate and strengthen the China-Vietnam good-neighborly friendship and comprehensive cooperation is the common aspiration of both peoples, as well as their common responsibility and mission. China is ready to work with Vietnam in following the guiding principle of long-term stability, orientation towards the future, good-neighborly friendship and all-round cooperation to further build up mutual understanding and trust, to earnestly implement cooperative deals signed between them and to cooperate on big projects to ensure rapid trade growth, he said. "China is ready to work with Vietnam to appropriately deal with the issue of land and maritime borders to jointly maintain peace in the border area," said Hu. The Chinese president also said the two countries should strengthen cooperation in multilateral areas and further coordinate on international and regional affairs so that their good-neighborly friendship and all-round cooperation will yield more fruitful results for the benefit of the people of the two countries and all Asians. Hu said the friendly exchanges between the National People's Congress of China and the Vietnamese National Assembly have helped enhance mutual understanding and friendship and enrich bilateral ties. He hoped that the parliaments of the two countries can promote exchanges, learn from each other's theories and experience on building socialist democracy and legal system and strengthen cooperation in international and regional parliament organizations, so as to contribute to the traditional friendship and all-round development of bilateral ties. Nguyen said Vietnam and China are both socialist countries sharing a time-honored traditional friendship, which Vietnam attaches great importance to. The Vietnamese party, government and parliament will as always work along with China to push their comprehensive friendly cooperation to a new high under the guidance of the 16-word principle, he said. Vice-Chairwoman Uyunqimg of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress and other officials attended the meeting.
