Wen Jiabao Meets with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet

2007/05/18

On May 18, 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai. During the meeting, Wen said China and Vietnam, as close neighbors, are both engaging in reform and construction. To consolidate good-neighborly friendship, strengthen exchanges and expand mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries is in the fundamental interests of both countries and their peoples and conducive to regional prosperity and stability. The Chinese government highly values relations with Vietnam and will make joint efforts with Vietnam to push forward bilateral ties, Wen added.

Triet said Vietnam cherishes the friendship cultivated by generations of leaders of the two countries and is delighted at the continuous progress of friendly cooperative ties. Vietnam is ready to work with China to consolidate the traditional friendship, deepen pragmatic cooperation and lift the ties to a new level, he added.

Triet reiterated Vietnam's adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to "Taiwan independence separatist activities" in any form, which Wen appreciated. Both leaders agreed that as China and Vietnam share complementary economies, there is broad prospect for their cooperation in infrastructure, energy development and telecommunication. Both countries are ready to seriously plan bilateral economic and trade cooperation, implement the cooperation documents already agreed upon, strive to expand trade scale and support mutual investment between enterprises. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Ma Kai, Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai and other officials attended the meeting.
