Yang Jiechi Meets with Foreign Minister of Maldives Shahid

2008/05/26

On May 26, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in Beijing with visiting Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid.

During the meeting, Yang said since the establishment of diplomatic ties 36 years ago, bilateral relations have always maintained a sound momentum of healthy development and can serve as a model for equality and peaceful coexistence between countries with different social systems. The Chinese government thanks for Maldives' long-standing support on issues involving China's core interests such as Taiwan and human rights. China is ready to continue working with Maldives to further expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all areas and push their traditional friendly relations to a new high.

Shahid said the government of Maldives will continue to abide by the one-China policy, reaffirming his country's support of the Beijing Olympic Games and opposition to politicizing the games. Shahid, on behalf of the government and people of Maldives, expressed condolences to the Chinese government and people over the Wenchuan earthquake and donated 50, 000 U.S. dollars in cash to the Chinese side, for which Yang expressed gratitude.

On the same day, Assistant Foreign Minister He Yafei and Foreign Minister Shahid attended an opening ceremony of Maldives' embassy in Beijing.
