Yang Jiechi Meets with Asian Ministers

On July 22, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met separately with foreign ministers of Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Japan and Singapore as well as the Thai deputy prime minister and transport minister. In the talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, Yang said China highly valued the development of strategic partnership with Indonesia, hoping that the two countries will sign an action plan of the strategic partnership as soon as possible. He urged both sides to earnestly advance cooperation in all areas and strengthen collaboration in international and regional affairs. China supports Indonesia's positive efforts to resolve the food security issue in the region and is ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with Indonesia and other ASEAN countries in this regard, added Yang. On his part, the Indonesian foreign minister said his country is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China and further expand the scale of bilateral trade. He expressed the hope that Indonesia and China will jointly tackle the issue of food security which is severely affecting some countries in the region. While meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, who is also Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi said that the establishment of China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership set the direction for the development of bilateral relations in the new period. China is ready to work with Vietnam to well implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and give full play to the role of the guiding committee for China-Vietnam bilateral cooperation in a bid to draw up a blueprint for and push forward cooperation in all areas. The Chinese foreign minister said the two sides should work together to speed up the boundary survey and the erection of boundary markers and ensure the stability in the South China Sea and long-term healthy and stable development of Sino-Vietnamese relations. Khiem said his country is ready to keep high-level exchanges and enhance economic and trade cooperation with China based on the policy of "long-term stability, orientation towards the future, good-neighborly friendship and all-round cooperation". He urged both sides to advance the cooperation program of "Two Corridors and One Ring" and push forward bilateral ties. Vietnam is ready to make joint efforts with China to push ahead the border demarcation and landmark plantation so that the task will be completed by the end of the year, said Khiem, adding that both sides should also properly handle the South China Sea issue. In the talks with Myanmar's Foreign Minister Nyan Win, Yang said China is happy to see Myanmar has taken concrete measures to cooperate with international community to conduct relief and reconstruct the country after the devastating cyclone in the country. Yang said China is willing to make active contributions to the rebuilding of the cyclone-hit areas in Myanmar. Yang reaffirmed China's principled position on the Myanmar issue, saying that China is ready to work with all parties concerned to play a positive role in properly resolving the issue. Win expressed thanks for China's support and assistance, saying that Myanmar will cooperate with China in the post-cyclone reconstruction. Win said Ibrahim Gambari, the special advisor to the UN Secretary-General on the Myanmar issue, will visit Myanmar in August, adding that the Myanmar side is ready to keep contact with relevant parties on this. In a meeting with Japan's Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura, Yang said China is ready to work with Japan to continue implementing the outcome of President Hu Jintao's visit to Japan this May, build strategic trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, expand humanities exchanges and enhance cooperation in international and regional affairs so as to push forward China-Japan strategic reciprocal relations. Komura said Japan is willing to keep high-level dialogue and promote the implementation of the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries on developing China-Japan strategic and reciprocal relations. Both sides agreed to work together to well hold the second China-Japan economic high-level dialogue, China-Japan youth friendly exchange year and activities marking the 30th anniversary of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. Both sides agreed to earnestly fulfill the principled consensus on the East China Sea and properly handle relevant issues. They also pledged to conduct cooperation on the reconstruction of China's quake-hit region, strengthen communication and coordination and ensure successes of the ASEM summit and the China-Japan-ROK leaders' meeting to be held within the year. In talks with Singapore's Foreign Minister George Yeo, Yang said that bilateral relations enjoy broad prospect for development and China is ready to work with Singapore to advance cooperation in all areas, promote development of the China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation and push for more achievements to be scored in such key cooperation projects as the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-city. As the issue of food and energy security poses a serious challenge to the world economy, China and Singapore should strengthen cooperation in the area to keep economic stability and development in the region. George Yeo said Singapore attaches great importance to its friendly cooperative relations with China and is ready to enhance communication and cooperation with China in the above-mentioned areas. In a meeting with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Sahat Banditkul, Yang expressed the hope that Thailand and Cambodia will exercise utmost restraint and resolve the border dispute peacefully. He noted that both Thailand and Cambodia are China's good neighbors and member states of the ASEAN and they should properly solve the dispute through bilateral channel, dialogue and consultation. Sahat said Thailand is ready to work with Cambodia to seek a solution acceptable to both sides through friendly consultation and peaceful means. During the above-mentioned meetings, Yang expressed thanks to these countries for their support of the Beijing Olympic Games. The ministers from these countries all wished the Beijing Olympic Games a great success.
