On October 25, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met at the Great Hall of the People with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who is accompanying French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Both sides exchanged views in a candid and in-depth manner on China-France, China-EU relations, agreeing to work together to ensure the success of the 11th China-EU summit to be held in France in December to build China-EU political trust, deepen practical cooperation in all areas and push for healthy, stable development of China-France, China-EU ties.

Both sides also discussed the specific matters concerning bilateral ties as well as Sudan, Afghanistan and other current major international hot issues.
