Yang Jiechi Meets Respectively with His Japanese, ROK Counterparts

2010/01/17

On January 17, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met respectively with his Japanese counterpart Katsuya Okada and Republic of Korea (ROK) counterpart Yu Myung-hwan on the sidelines of the 4th foreign ministers' meeting of the Forum for an East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) in Tokyo, Japan.

During his meeting with Okada, Yang said that leaders of both nations have met on several occasions and reached a series of consensus over further deepening bilateral strategic and mutually beneficial relations since the Democratic Party of Japan came to power. China is ready to work with Japan in the spirit of the consensus and take favorable opportunities to make fresh headway in advancing the strategic and mutually beneficial relations, said Yang. The Chinese foreign minister said the two sides need to keep high-level exchanges to continuously inject new impetus into the development of bilateral ties. Both sides should conduct dialogue and facilitate coordination in fiscal, financial and macroeconomic policies, focus on the trend of post-crisis world economic growth, and promote cooperation in green economy and global economic recovery. He also urged both sides to push forward bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges by taking the opportunity of the Shanghai Expo. Both sides should maintain cooperation on major international issues such as the financial crisis and climate change.

Okada, for his part, said that the Japanese government will continue to commit to pushing for sustained, stable development of Japan-China strategic and mutually beneficial relations. Japan is willing to keep high-level exchanges with China, boost Japan-China high-level economic dialogue and cooperation, actively participate in the Shanghai Expo, and facilitate communication and coordination on such issues as climate change.

During his meeting with Yu Myung-hwan, Yang said with the joint efforts of both sides, China-ROK relations continue to maintain favorable momentum. Both sides have witnessed frequent high-level exchanges, steadily growing trade cooperation, and remarkable results in joint efforts to tackle the global financial crisis. Both sides have kept active humanities contacts, conducted in-depth cooperation in the cultural, educational, media and youth fields and maintained sound coordination in major international and regional issues. Yang said that in the new year China will work with South Korea in a joint effort to make fresh progress in the development of bilateral ties. Both sides should maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges to strengthen strategic communication; deepen trade cooperation to keep closer the ties of interest; make Visit China Year and Visit Korea Year a success to consolidate the foundation of people-to-people friendship; and enhance multilateral coordination to safeguard common interests.

Yu said that South Korea attaches great importance to its relations with China, and is willing to keep high-level exchanges and promote cooperation with China within the China-Japan-ROK, ASEAN plus China, Japan and ROK, the Group of 20 and other frameworks. Both sides should also work to ensure the success of Visit China Year and Visit Korea Year so as to build up mutual understanding and friendship between both peoples. As both sides will host the Shanghai Expo and Yeosu Expo respectively, the ROK side hopes both countries will support and learn from each other in this regard.
