2010/02/03

On February 3, 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding at the Great Hall of the People.

"Jamaica is one of the first countries in the Caribbean region to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, it always adheres to the one-China policy, and the two peoples have friendly feelings toward each other," Wen said. In recent years, China has been committed to developing friendly partnership of common development with Jamaica, with bilateral exchanges and cooperation making new headway in all areas. China is ready to boost exchanges with Jamaica at various levels, enhance coordination on international affairs and jointly safeguard the interests of developing countries. The two sides should expand cooperation in infrastructure, mining and tourism based on the principle of equality and mutual benefit. The Chinese government encourages competent businesses to investment in Jamaica, said Wen. China will continue to offer assistance within its ability to Jamaica’s economic development, supports more exchanges between both sides on culture, education and sports, and welcomes Jamaica to participate in the Shanghai World Expo.

"As the international financial crisis has had severe impact on the economy of China and the Caribbean states, we should help each other, enhance cooperation, and jointly cope with challenges so as to boost our friendly ties," Wen said.

On climate change, Wen said China understands and sympathizes with the special circumstances of small-island countries, including Jamaica. Wen vowed to strengthen coordination with small-island countries in urging developed countries to carry out their obligations of providing fund, technology and support for capability building of developing countries so as to jointly push forward international cooperation.

Golding hailed the sound bilateral exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy and humanities, saying the people of Jamaica thank for China’s support and assistance to Jamaica’s economic and social development over the years and Jamaica attaches great importance to developing friendly cooperative relations with China. Golding pledged to stick to the one-China policy and voiced hope to expand trade and economic ties between the two countries to overcome the severe challenges posed by the global financial crisis. He said his country welcomes Chinese companies to invest and develop in Jamaica. Jamaica is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China in international affairs and jointly safeguard the interests of developing nations.

Golding said China's prompt humanitarian aid to Haiti after the devastating earthquake last month indicated the friendly feelings that Chinese people hold towards Caribbean people. Jamaica is ready to play a positive role in pushing forward the relations between Caribbean states and China.

Golding appreciated China's responsible attitude in tackling climate change and its efforts to push the international community to offer support to developing countries. Jamaica is ready to further cooperation with China.

Following the talks, the two prime ministers attended a signing ceremony of a number of documents on bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, infrastructure construction, social development and other areas.

Prior to the talks, Premier Wen held a welcome ceremony for Golding’s visit at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Vice Chairperson of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK) He Pijie, Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya and Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica Chen Jinghua attended the welcome ceremony.
