--China and Japan Should Conduct Broad Cooperation and Carry Out Touching Humanities Exchanges

2010/02/08

The first meeting of the Fifth 21st Century Committee for China-Japan Friendship continued in Beijing on February 8, 2010. Tang Jiaxuan, senior member of China, and Taizo Nishimuro, senior member of Japan, co-chaired the meeting. Both sides held heated and in-depth discussions in a friendly and candid atmosphere on such topics as changes in the international situation and China-Japan relations, international and regional economic trends and China-Japan cooperation, changes in China-Japan public opinions and national feelings of the two countries and offered a lot of useful views and suggestions.

First, on China's development. The Chinese side expounded on the country's path of peaceful development, emphasizing that China remains committed to pushing forward the building of a harmonious Asia and world. Both sides held that China's development, as an opportunity for all countries in the world including Japan, will open up broader space for the development of bilateral ties.

Second, on the two countries' respective policies towards each other. The Chinese side made positive comments on Hatoyama's Cabinet attaching importance to China-Japan ties and Asia. Both sides agreed that the two governments' policy orientation on China-Japan relations is basically the same, which is conducive to building political trust and pushing forward bilateral ties.

Third, on the Asian integration. Both sides held that the close China-Japan cooperation is the key to accelerating Asian integration. Both countries should enhance dialogue, coordination and cooperation by proceeding from their respective long-term development and the Asian overall interests.

Fourth, on national feelings of the two countries. Both sides held that the national feelings of the two countries have been improved, but the foundation is still fragile. It is a long-term important task to improve people's friendly feelings towards each other. Both sides should continuously increase input, engage in humanities exchanges with perseverance in a touching way and language and promote educational, tourism, media, people-to-people and youth exchanges.

Following the meeting, the committee members of the two sides jointly met the press.
