On June 15, 2006, the 6th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held in Shanghai.

At 9:00 am, Chinese President Hu Jintao welcomed Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov and Uzbek President Islam Karimov at Shanghai International Convention Center. Later, the six heads of state took a group photo and held small-group talks.

This summit was held on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the SCO and the 10th anniversary of the "Shanghai Five" mechanism. It is introduced that President Hu Jintao will chair this historic summit and deliver a speech that comprehensively elaborates China's policy towards the SCO and suggestions on pushing for development of this organization.
