Wen Jiabao Meets with Foreign Leaders to Opening Ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games

On August 8, 2008, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met respectively with some of the foreign leaders who were here to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games. Premier Wen extended a warm welcome to all the leaders to the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, and thanked the foreign governments and people for their support to China's preparations for the Games.

The foreign leaders attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games spoke highly of China's effective efforts in hosting the Olympic Games, and expressed belief that the games will surely be a great success.

During his meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Wen said France is an important partner of China in the European Union. President Sarkozy has recently expressed his best wishes for the Chinese people and his aspiration to commit to pushing for China-France comprehensive strategic partnership, for which Wen expressed appreciation. China cherishes the cooperation and friendship between the two countries and their peoples and hopes that the long-term bilateral retaliations will remain comprehensive and strategic. China is ready to strengthen consultations and coordination with France to push for positive outcome of the 11th China-EU Summit Meeting and the seventh summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting and promote China-EU relations and Asia-Europe ties.

Sarkozy said he was delighted to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on behalf of France and the EU. China's development is conducive to world peace and stability and global key issues can't be resolved without China's cooperation. France attaches great importance to ties with China and is ready to work with China to open up a new prospect for China-France relations. France is ready to continue playing a positive role in pushing forward EU-China relations.

Wen said in his meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Vladimirovic Putin that to develop China-Russia strategic cooperative partnership not only conforms to the fundamental interest of the two countries and their peoples and is also conducive to world peace, stability and development. The development of bilateral ties enjoys a sound momentum with frequent high-level exchanges and effective pragmatic cooperation and strategic coordination. China is ready to bring into full play the role of the prime ministers' regular meeting mechanism and identify optimizing trade mix, promoting mutual investment, deepening energy cooperation, conducting high-tech research and development and well holding "the Year of the Russian Language" and "the Year of the Chinese Language" as priorities of the next phase, so as to celebrate the 60th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic relations next year with more fruitful results.

Putin said Russia and China are committed to enhancing good-neighborly friendship and strategic cooperation and the two countries have shown mutual understanding and support on many major issues, carried out fruitful cooperation on politics, economy and humanities and kept close coordination in international affairs, which is the in the common interest of both sides. Relationship with China is a priority of Russia's foreign policy and Russia is ready to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen cooperation on economy, trade, energy and science and technology and well hold "the Year of the Russian Language" and "the Year of the Chinese Language" in a bid to push forward Russia-China relations.

When meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, Wen urged both sides to seize the rare opportunity and open up a new prospect for China-Japan strategic reciprocal relations to contribute to regional peace and development. China is ready to maintain high-level visits with Japan, build up political trust, play the role of China-Japan high-level economic dialogue and join hands to cope with global challenges. Both sides should also deepen economic and trade cooperation, strengthen cooperation on energy conservation and environmental protection and increase mutual understanding between the two peoples through activities marking the 30th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship and China-Japan youth friendly exchange year so as to carry forward China-Japan friendship from generation to generation.

Fukuda said Japan is committed to deepening strategic reciprocal relations with China and is ready to seriously implement various important consensuses reached by both sides, maintain close exchanges between the leaders of both countries, strengthen bilateral cooperation and expand humanities contacts. Japan would like to work with China to carry out high-level economic dialogue to push for all-round development of bilateral ties. Fukuda also expressed Japan's willingness to support China's reconstruction efforts in the quake-hit areas.

When meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Wen said China and Pakistan enjoy an all-weather friendship and all-round cooperation, describing the two countries as good neighbors, partners and brothers. China will as always support Pakistan's efforts for national stability and economic growth and is ready to work with Pakistan to grasp bilateral ties form a strategic and long-term perspective, promote good-neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation and push bilateral strategic partnership to a new level.

Gillani said to develop Pakistan-China friendly cooperative relations is a widespread aspiration of the Pakistani people, as well as a consensus shared by personages from all walks of life and all political parties. Pakistan hopes to strengthen cooperation with China on economy, trade and infrastructure construction, offer firm mutual support and coordination in multilateral areas and promote friendly exchanges between the two peoples to carry forward their traditional friendship.

In a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Wen said China-Australia relations had kept a development momentum and the two countries' common interests are far greater than differences. "China is ready to deepen energy and resources cooperation with Australia and continue to promote bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, while properly handling the concerns of the two sides," he said. "China and Australia can become close partners of cooperation in numerous areas to contribute to peace and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region as long as they follow the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits and strengthen dialogues and negotiations," Wen said.

Rudd said faced with such global challenges as rising oil and food prices and climate change, both sides should cooperate more closely and join hands to cope with the challenges. Australia hoped to become a lasting cooperation partner of China and was ready to make joint efforts with China to promote the FTA talks towards substantive progress.

While meeting with Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, Wen said the China-Thailand friendship has a solid basis and bilateral ties have withstood various tests. With the deepening of globalization, state-to-state ties are much closer and those between neighboring states are even more so. Wen pledged that China would strengthen strategic cooperation with Thailand and deepen the friendly ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to jointly face challenges for common development.

Samak said Thailand was ready to continue pushing forward the traditional friendship and cooperation with China and appreciated China's important role for enhancing ASEAN-China friendly cooperation. Thailand would work with China for new progress in ASEAN-China relations, he added.

In meeting with Prime Minister of Myanmar Thein Sein, Wen said China hoped and believed Myanmar's government and people could realize political stability, economic development and national reconciliation through democratic negotiation. He said China will play a constructive role in resolving the Myanmar issue. "China will continue to follow a good-neighborly policy towards Myanmar, and work with the international community to help Myanmar overcome difficulties," he said.

Thein Sein thanked for China's support and assistance after Myanmar's cyclone disaster and said he hoped China would continue to support and participate in Myanmar's reconstruction and economic development. He also briefed on Myanmar's efforts to advance the domestic democratic process.

During the meeting with Prime Minister of Djibouti Dileita Mohamed Dileita, Wen said China appreciated Djibouti's adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's major concerns. China would continue to offer help within its capacity for Djibouti's economic development and improvement of the people's livelihood. "We would take the 30th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations as an opportunity to promote two-way cooperation and exchanges on economy, trade, education, public health and culture for new progress," Wen said.

Dileita said his country was grateful for China's precious support and assistance, and would firmly stand together with the Chinese people on the Taiwan question and other issues.

While meeting with Prime Minister of Chad Youssouf Saleh Abbas, Wen said that to promote China-Chad friendship accords with the fundamental interests of the two nations and the two peoples. He said since resuming diplomatic relations two years ago, China and Chad have supported each other in major concerns and conducted smooth cooperation in agriculture, infrastructure construction and energy areas, noting that China supports Chad government's efforts to safeguard national stability and promote economic growth.

Abbas spoke highly of Chad-China relations and said the Chadian government and people held a profound friendship for China and expected to increase friendly cooperation with China in various forms.
