Hu Jintao Meets with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit

2009/06/26

On the morning of June 26, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at the Great Hall of the People.

During the meeting, Hu said the two countries are close neighbors and the friendship between both peoples enjoys a time-honored history. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in the 1970s, bilateral relations have withstood the tests of fluctuating international and domestic situations and have been improving and developing. In particular in recent years, China-Thailand relations have maintained a sound momentum of development thanks to the joint efforts of both sides. Their relationship can be viewed as an exemplary one of equality, mutually beneficial cooperation and harmonious coexistence between countries with different social systems.

Hu called Thailand a reliable friend and good partner of China in Southeast Asia. He said China placed great importance on its relations with Thailand and was ready to deepen bilateral links. Noting that the two countries would mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic links in 2010, Hu said he hoped both sides would make good preparations for relevant activities to mark the event so that the belief that "China and Thailand are as close as one family" would take deeper root in the hearts of the two peoples. He expressed belief that the China-Thailand good-neighborly relationship of friendly cooperation, which is based on the traditional friendship and common interests, will embrace a better future.

Hailing the close exchanges between the two countries, Abhisit said the Thai people cherished the traditional friendship and appreciated the development achievements of China. Thailand is ready to take the opportunity of the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year and work with China to further advance friendly relations based on the existing sound basis. Abhisit thanked the Chinese government for its position on opposing trade protectionism and focusing on safeguarding the interests of developing countries amid the spreading global economic crisis. He said his country would like to join hands with China to meet challenges. Thailand is also ready to strengthen cooperation with China in economy, trade, investment, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure and expand cultural exchanges. Abhisit said Thailand was ready to collaborate with China on advancing cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China and welcomed continued efforts of China to support stability and development of Thailand and the region as a whole.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya and other officials attended the meeting.
