On December 17, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Copenhagen.

Wen said that China and Brazil, the two major developing countries, enjoyed broad consensus on international cooperation in tackling global climate change. The two countries have been firmly standing with other developing countries to safeguard their common interests. They have been playing an important and constructive role in pushing forward the negotiating process at the Copenhagen climate change conference by engaging in close communications and coordination with concerned parties to enhance mutual trust and broaden consensus, demonstrating their serious and responsible attitude to the world and the future of mankind, Wen said. The Chinese premier said that developed nations should give support to efforts by developing countries for sustainable development, which is conducive to joint efforts in coping with climate change.

Lula, on his part, said that Brazil and China shared the same position on negotiations at the Copenhagen conference. Both countries, in parallel with economic development, have taken active measures to deal with climate change, the Brazilian president added. International cooperation in tackling climate change should follow the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" and developing countries should not be asked to do what is beyond their ability and development level, Lula said. Brazil is willing to maintain close communications and coordination with the Chinese side to strengthen solidarity among developing countries and make joint efforts with all sides so that the Copenhagen conference will end with some achievements, the Brazilian president said.
