On March 2, 2010, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in Beijing with visiting Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing.
Yang pointed out that migration has been drawing increasing attention from the international community with the progress of globalization. Normal and orderly migration is conducive to the rational allocation of labor resources on a global scale and economic development and cultural exchange of countries. Meanwhile, migration-related issues such as illegal immigration are getting increasingly prominent as the scale and scope of migration expand. The Chinese government is willing to strengthen cooperation with the international community including the IOM to promote the normal and orderly flow of population, protect the legitimate rights and interests of migrants and fight against illegal migration.
Swing said that the global migration has exceeded 200 million and population movement will continue to expand along with economic development. In recent years, the IOM has conducted sound cooperation with the Chinese government and both sides should continue to reinforce cooperation in the capacity building of migration management. China has the largest population in the world and is expected to play a bigger role in the field of migration.
