On August 24, 2026, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Beijing.
Wang Yi noted that the traditional friendship between China and Kuwait runs deep and has a long history. Kuwait was the first Gulf Arab country to establish diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China, and His Excellency the Minister’s father was the first leader from a Gulf Arab country to visit China after the founding of New China. Over the past half-century and more, the two countries have stood together through thick and thin, forging ahead hand in hand. The political mutual trust has grown ever stronger, the foundation of mutually beneficial cooperation has been firmly laid, and the path of friendship has continued to broaden, setting a shining example of state-to-state relations based on mutual respect, equality, and win-win cooperation. The Chinese side has always attached great importance to its relations with Kuwait. China stands ready to work with Kuwait to seize the opportunity of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and build a China-Kuwait strategic partnership that is more solidly grounded, higher in quality, and richer in substance.
Wang Yi stated that China supports the people of Kuwait, under the leadership of Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in pursuing a successful path of development that aligns with the country’s national conditions. He expressed confidence that Kuwait will continue to support China’s just position on issues concerning China’s core interests. Both sides should continuously expand exchanges and cooperation across various fields, deliver more tangible outcomes, and better benefit the people of both countries. China hopes that the Kuwaiti side will ensure the safety of Chinese personnel, institutions, and projects in Kuwait. Efforts should be made to further facilitate people-to-people exchanges, thereby consolidating the popular foundation for bilateral friendship. Furthermore, China stands ready to maintain close coordination with Kuwait on multilateral platforms to jointly defend multilateralism and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South.
Wang Yi stressed that the current situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region has once again reached a critical juncture. The old script of recurring conflict must not be replayed, and a new chapter of stability and prosperity should be opened as soon as possible. China has always maintained that, no matter how serious the differences, a way forward should be found at the negotiating table rather than through the force of arms. Since steps have already been taken toward a ceasefire and an end to hostilities, there should be no turning back. China hopes that the parties concerned should respond positively to the international community’s desire for peace, prioritize the well-being of people across the region and return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible. The top priority is to de-escalate the situation. China is willing to strengthen coordination with Kuwait and continue contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the region.
Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah stated that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and China. The Kuwaiti side highly cherishes the deep and traditional friendship between the two countries, profoundly appreciates the great development achievements the Chinese people have made under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and extends heartfelt gratitude to China for its long-standing, selfless assistance to Kuwait, as well as its support for Kuwait in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Kuwait firmly adheres to the one-China principle and stands ready to work with China to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, safeguard the shared interests, and accelerate the advancement of major bilateral cooperation projects. Furthermore, Kuwait hopes to deepen practical cooperation in areas such as investment and energy, strengthen coordination and collaboration on multilateral affairs, and further enrich the substance of the Kuwait-China strategic partnership. Kuwait attaches great importance to the safety of Chinese nationals, institutions and projects within the country and will continue providing them with protection. Kuwait appreciates China’s constructive role regarding the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, and is determined to strengthen communication and coordination with China, help restore regional security and stability at an early date, and safeguard the freedom and security of international shipping lanes.
